Dental Care Tips

We know, you’ve heard it before…  …brush after every meal and floss daily!  These two easy steps are probably the most effective things you can do to maintain a clean and healthy mouth, yet when we talk to our patients, young and old, so many of them still don’t do it.


Here are a few more things you can do to help maintain good oral health:

Dental Hygiene

  • Use an anti-microbial mouth rinse to help reduce plaque between your teeth.
  • While brushing, the length of time it takes to brush should be no less than two minutes.
  • Brushing your tongue as well as your teeth can help eliminate mouth-borne bacteria.
  • A soft or medium head toothbrush is the best - hard bristles can be tough on teeth and cause irritation of the enamel.
  • Replace your toothbrush every two months to ensure proper cleaning and to keep your brush free from germs.



Diet

  • Avoid eating too much sugar and drinking sugary drinks like soda, sweetened teas and fruit juices.
  • Fresh fruits like apples can be good for your teeth, as they can help remove loose foods and help clean the surface of your teeth.
  • Avoid chewing tobacco and smoking to help ensure better gum, mouth, and teeth health for life.
  • Acidic foods and drinks such as oranges or orange juice can promote tooth decay and enamel wear. If you do consume acidic foods, be sure to brush afterwards.
  • Snacking between meals should be limited, but if you choose to snack, try to eat healthy foods without sugar.
  • Chewing sugarless gum after meals and snacks is a good way to substitute brushing in between meals, and it can help remove food particles from between the teeth.
